I get stuff like that all the time, usually they’re messages about interviewing to sell insurance in the suburbs. No thanks, if I lose my job I’ll just work at 7/11.

Some of the daft shit that recruiters sling around makes me rather angry.

I live in the Seattle metro area. Anyone with a pulse capable of writing a “Hello world” program in any random language can make well into six figures with zero experience around here, but there are a bunch of bottom-feeder recruiters constantly trying to land people at half the going rates. Are they crazy, or just stupid? Stop wasting our time. No, I’m not going deep into the north/south suburbs for a crap job that pays less than half what I make...
Thankfully, these people tend to cold message you, which is a good indication that they aren’t worth even acknowledging.

How are living expenses there?
(Roughly eight years experience with a masters, not making six figures, but also living in a cheaper location)

Absolutely ridiculous with unconscionable traffic everywhere. Depending on how far out you’re willing to commute from in the unconscionable traffic, it ranges from about $450k-Millions for housing. Many places that would be dead average elsewhere sell for well over a million. It’s not quite as bad as SF, but it’s approaching it rapidly and the traffic is far worse (so you need to be a lot closer to have a similar commute). My last place was 1.2M and was nothing special (3/2.5, 2000sq/ft). Current place is over an hour from downtown with no traffic, so it was a mere $620k, and it’s really nothing special (just a tract home).
Additionally, some people can’t handle the 9+ months of grey and rain, resulting in alcoholism and drug abuse.

Yeah, those are pretty much the only sort of unsolicited job offers you’re going to get. Those, and the “be your own boss” franchise offers and Bankers Life agent things.

Additionally: Although I love the weather, moss, and trees, which were the main draw for me, I wouldn’t make the move today. When I moved here 5 years ago, I took a small pay cut but my income taxes dropped entirely and my housing costs were a third of what they were in San Diego. Today, I wouldn’t make the move due to housing alone. There just wouldn’t be any financial incentive to do it.

Good to know. I’m pretty happy with my 20 minute commute, even if I do earn a lot less. I do find housing to be proportionally more expensive in Canada compared to the US, but even then, I still can’t complain much.
